Moroccan Sahara Desert Tour

Day 1: Marrakech – AitBenhaddou– Ouarzazate – Agdezmarrakech_cafe_france

We pick you up from your Marrakech hotel or riad in the morning and travel south, crossing the High Atlas Mountains at the Tizi n’ Tichka Pass, also known as the ‘Gateway to the Sahara’, which at 2260m is the highest pass in North Africa. We stop to admire the spectacular panoramic views of the mountains and valleys with Berber villages perched precariously on the hillsides.

On our journey towards Agdez we will stop to visit several Kasbahs, including Tamnougalte and Ait BenHaddou. This beautiful 16th century fortified city of terraced kasbahs is one of the best preserved and most spectacular Kasbahs in Morocco.It is one of the best examples of earthen construction in existence, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It may also look familiar, as several well-known films have been shot there, including epics such as “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Gladiator”.

After lunch in the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, we continue through the fertile, palm-lined Draa river valley to Agdez passing by Ouarzazate. This is where we stop to enjoy dinner and spend the night in a hotel.

.Day 2 : Agdez – Zagora – Tamgroute – ErgLihoudi

After breakfast, we set off for the small town of ErgLihoudi on the edge of the Sahara. On the way we stop at the village of Zagora and Tamgroute, where we visit the Koranic library, stroll through the underground streets, and learn about the traditional methods of pottery making, for which the village is renowned.

After Lunch in Tamgroute, we continue to Mhamid, followed by a 2 hour camel trek to explore the oasis and the edge of the desert.

On arrival at the bivouac, we will watch the magical moment of sunset, before enjoying a traditional meal whilst entertained by local musicians. We spend the night in Berber tents or under the stars.

Day 3: Erg Lihoudi – Ouarzazate – Marrakech


Next morning we enjoy breakfast at the campsite, and then set off on our return journey to Marrakech. We take the track from M’hamid to the dry riverbed of the Draa. Here, we re-join the road and continue towards Marrakech, passing through Ouarzazate and having lunch. We will stop several times for photo opportunities of the glorious scenery before arriving back at Marrakech and your hotel in the evening.
